TreatmentsMost dogs infected with heartworm could be successfully treated. The goal of treatment is to kill all of mature worms using an adulticide and all microfilariae using a microfilaricide. It is important to attempt and accomplish this goal with a minimum of harmful effects from drugs along with a tolerable degree of complications created by the dying heartworms. Heartworm infected puppies showing no signs or moderate signs have a high success rate with treatment.
